FreeNAS 0.64 - NAS Server Operating System

FreeNAS 0.64 (Freeware, Open Source, 25 MB) is a free NAS (Network-Attached Storage server, supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, RSYNC protocols, local user authentication, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration interface. FreeNAS takes less than 16MB once installed on Compact Flash, hard drive or USB key.
The minimal FreeBSD distribution, Web interface, PHP scripts and documentation are based on M0n0wall.

Latest changes:

  • Fixed the read-only UFS disks
  • Fixed the asian support for CIFS share
  • Fixed some tipos in the WebGUI
  • Used a valided method for creating software RAID volume (but still same problem with software RAID 5)
  • Minors enhancement in status:system page


Instead of purchasing a standalone NAS appliance, you could use a regular PC with FreeNAS.
