TrueCrypt 4.1 - Open Source Encryption Software

TrueCrypt 4.1 (Windows, Freeware, 1.29MB) [via SnapFiles] is an open-source encryption software that enables you to create a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mount it as a virtual disk, that can be accessed via a drive letter.

Any file that is stored on this virtual drive is automatically encrypted on-the-fly, and can only be accessed while the drive is mounted with the correct password or key. TrueCrypt supports a variety of encryption algorithms, including AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish. Other features include support for FAT32 or NTFS formatting, hidden volumes, hotkeys for mounting/dismounting and more.

Features:

  • Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
  • Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a device, such as USB flash drive.
  • Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
  • Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
    • Hidden volume (steganography)
    • No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
  • Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish. Mode of operation: LRW (CBC supported as legacy).
  • Based on Encryption for the Masses (E4M) 2.02a, conceived in 1997.

Do you need to protect some vital digital information? Do you share a PC with others, and would like to have some files (i.e. worksheets, bank info, pictures) accessible only to you? TrueCrypt may be the software you are looking for. And it is free to use.
